Youth Market Leads the Way for New Ways of Watching Television
The youth market is leading the way in the use of devices other than TV for watching videos. Not of great surprise, too many of us Im sure, we’ve all seen the teenagers glued to their iPods, mobile phones and laptops on trains and buses. What is interesting is the percentage of this age range of 13 – 34 year olds that are using this technology to change their viewing habits.According to the soon to be released study by E-Poll entitled “Multi-Platform Viewing of Video Content,” 26% of young people prefer to watch video content on their portable devices over standard television. The sheer availability of choice when it comes to online and portable video, coupled with the popularity of user generated content is seen to be driving this growth:
75% view on a desktop computer
46% view on a laptop
16% view on a portable video player
13% view on iPod
13% view on cell phone
The most popular content are music videos, TV programs, movies and videos on websites but the study showed that thenks to the trend in portable media devices, viewing happens almost everywhere (traveling, school, work outdoors, social events) and mostly in the afternoons and evenings. The research also showed an interesting change in public perceptions and viewing habits when it came to moving video content from their computer over to their televisions with 13% currently transferring video content from their computer to their TV. The study showed that:
Almost half didn’t know it was possible to transfer video to their TV
About half would like this functionality but only 17% would pay $100 or more for a device
Almost 1/3 would still be interested, even if it required a complicated installation
Clearly the future is not only in devloping new devices to enable usuage of online video to be made easier, but crucially providing the core content that is going to make more and more these people make use of this exciting new medium. If you are wanting to target the youth market more exclusively, then this is an ideal time to start looking at pushing your brand through online video, quick before everyone else does!!
